An illustration from the 40 resurfaced Papal Codices during late 1990s. It was created during the reign of Urban VIII and contains allegories of death, including a skull with snakes slithering through its eye sockets. The image accompanies a mass for the commemoration of a deceased pope. The message was clear: Even the leader of the church must prepare to be judged. These Papal manuscripts were spirited away in 1798 from Vatican to Toledo, Spain, in order to be saved from Napoleon Bonaparte’s raiding armies. They were discovered and went on public in late 1990s
